The Panama Canal – Built to Last
I first became a member of the “Order of the Ditch” when I sailed through the Panama Canal as a young man while working for Princess Cruises. At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate the magnitude of what was involved in creating this incredible engineering marvel. Over the holidays, and this time transiting as a passenger, I made an effort to learn as much as I could about the history and of the canal, how it works and those who built it. Wow…I would encourage you to experience a transit yourself one day if you haven’t had the pleasure.

There are a few lessons that I learned that can apply to business:
  • No matter how big the challenge seems, creative people working in collaboration with one another is a formidable force
  • A problem can always be broken down into bite-sized pieces
  • There will always be onlookers who doubt – just be certain they aren’t on your team
  • It is vital that everyone involved understands the big picture and how their work contributes to the desired end result
  • Have patience – building something to last takes time
  • Surround yourself with a diverse set of people and recognize their unique talents
  • Measure twice and cut once
